PUFFIN PAD
PUFFIN PAD
Design a home for the Atlantic Puffin in the brand language of Mater
Exploring designing for a specific client. A raised and interlocking home for an Atlantic Puffin, using NestWatch’s standards for safe birdhouses.

Atlantic Puffins
Spend most of their lives at sea
Monogamous, return to the same nesting site every year
Facing extinction
Critical to support newborn survival
Warmer waters and overfishing are driving away prey
Live in burrows or between rocks on the cliffs
Both can flood or get too cold for chicks
Puffins live together, but are protective of their individual burrows

2D Ideation
50 sketch iterations with the key concepts of creating a stackable and safe design for supporting puffins.

3D Ideation
Laser cut cardboard models and Solidworks iteration on the final form. Tested ways to stack the houses and protect from rain. The final design is modular, allowing for easy repairs.

First Prototype Attempt
The first iteration of my prototype failed, because there was no easy way to line all of the parts up together. The box was slanted and didn’t have any stability. The dovetails were also broken in the process of assembling the body.

Final Build
For my final build, I designed a new CNC file to cut all of the side pieces. This allowed me to easily assemble the body by slotting everything together. The front panel was 3d printed and slots into the form.
