The challenge: The habitat needed to account for cold and flooding while giving each bird a distinct nesting space. These research-led constraints guided the raised form, entry, and interior layout.

I explored raised, interlocking shapes that address exposure and borrow Mater’s restrained geometry.
Cardboard models helped me compare entry placement, interior space, and assembly before building in wood.
The selected form became laminated wood components with a removable nesting chamber. The photographs show the fabrication and assembly.
A physical academic prototype, built to explore form and construction. It was not tested with live animals.
Puffin Pad connects research and brand analysis to tangible choices in form, joinery, and fabrication. Animal testing would be needed to assess its suitability as a habitat.
